With many different materials to choose from, it can be hard to know which steps to take when installing a new patio. Here are three common pitfalls to avoid:

  • Damp Proof Courses

  • Sub Bases

  • Drainage Installations

Damp Proof Courses

If your patio connects to your house, or any other nearby building, it is important that it is built beneath the damp proof course, or DPC.

DPCs are installed to prevent dampness from rising from the ground and infiltrating your home. They must be at least 150mm above ground level to prevent splashback from rain and other factors.

When building your new patio, you must ensure that it does not exceed 150mm below the DPC. Our groundworks specialists will advise on any garden paving installations and will construct concrete bases, new driveways and drainage installations for properties across Woking.

Sub Bases

When laying sub bases, you must ensure that they are level, solid and sufficiently deep. We are often called to rectify poor installations which are angled towards the home or sag in certain places.

You must dig down at least 15cm, compact the sub grade and add a mixture of quality aggregates in order to ensure a durable sub base.

On top of the hardcore or gravel, a mortar base must be applied for a seamless finish. Do not be tempted to take shortcuts or skimp on materials, as you will be left out of pocket in the long term.

Drainage Installations

A common mistake that homeowners in Woking make when installing a new patio is neglecting to provide proper drainage. Depending on many environmental factors, including slopes, soil type, surrounding vegetation and more, drainage may be essential to your garden.

Placing a large, non-permeable surface on a previously well-draining garden can have unexpected consequences, so you must prepare to divert rainwater responsibly.

Larger patios require drainage channels, and some properties may even require soakaways. Based in Woking, our groundworks specialists are here with a full package of services for your home. Our new driveways, garden paving, concrete bases and drainage installations are of the highest quality.
